ScienTec News & Press Releases, OCT 18, 2016
Ms Karen Tok, ScienTec Consulting's CEO, shared her inspirational entrepreneurial journey with 900 ITE college students at the ITE Alumni Entrepreneurship Forum 2016 held in ITE College Central. She shared 8 myths of entrepreneurship while drawing from her own personal entrepreneurial journey.
Regarding one of the myths, Ms Tok stated that entrepreneurs instead of focussing on returns, focus on what they are willing to lose. Recounting her early days in ScienTec Consulting, she said that she was willing to give up a secure pay check, her personal time, adequate sleep (20-hour work day and equipped with a sleeping bag in the office), and looking good in front of others – the fear of failure is one of the biggest fears entrepreneurs have to overcome but if conquered, a whole new world will open up to them.
Another myth debunked was that entrepreneurs focus on goals – instead they focus on their means. She shared examples of how she looked at what means and resources were available to her to solve her start-up challenges. Entrepreneurs do not predict the future; they create it – by continuously innovating and improving one’s stock of means, an entrepreneur is able to deal with the unexpected and creatively come up with solutions for specific problems.
Ms Tok was also on hand to answer questions from the floor during the Q&A segment. She ended her insightful talk with the following key takeaways:
• Don’t let setbacks take your mind off the path
• Continue to review and innovate your processes
• Find successful mentors to learn from
• Build true service value and focus on the customer
• Develop and inspire your team to greater heights
As Ms Tok says, “I am inspired by possibilities and motivated by adversity”, may the spirit of entrepreneurship spur these ITE students on to launch their very own entrepreneurial journeys.
